— Questions
Honest answers.
Is PayDue a law firm?+
No. PayDue is a software tool. We provide legal information and document templates, not legal advice. For advice specific to your situation, always consult a licensed attorney. Our templates were reviewed by an attorney licensed in NY and CA.
Does this only work in New York and California?+
For now, yes. The statutory demand letter feature relies on specific state laws — NY's Freelance Isn't Free Act and CA's SB 988. We're adding Illinois and Minnesota next.
What if my client is in another state but I work in NY/CA?+
Generally, NY and CA freelance laws apply based on where the freelancer is based, not the client. You can use PayDue regardless of where your clients are located.
Is the demand letter actually legally valid?+
Yes. It cites the relevant statute, demands the statutory remedy, and follows the format required by law. Reviewed by a NY/CA-licensed freelance attorney before launch.
What happens if the client still doesn't pay after the demand letter?+
You can pursue small claims court (up to $10,000 in NY, $12,500 in CA) or file a complaint with NYC's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (NY) or the California Labor Commissioner. The statutory damages provision means you can claim 2× the unpaid amount plus attorney's fees.
When does PayDue launch?+
We're targeting summer 2026 for public launch. Waitlist members get early access in late spring and lifetime founder pricing.
